"Detention Without Physical Examination of Cocoa Beans from Brazil and Indonesia Due to Presence of Live Insects"

Reason for Alert:
During the first six months of FY91, BLT-DO has made a total of 44 detentions for live insect infestation from 57 shipments of cocoa beans from Brazil (77% violation rate). These 44 detentions represented 9 different Brazilian shippers.

Also for this same period of time, BLT-DO made 144 detentions for live insect infestation from 149 shipments of cocoa beans from Indonesia (96% violation rate). These detentions represented 17 Indonesian
shippers.

During this same period, BLT-DO made 70 detentions for live insect infestation for 122 shipments of cocoa beans (57% violation rate). These detentions represented four different shippers.

Results were obtained using Macroanalytical Procedures Manual (MPM) V-18.

Guidance:
Districts may detain, without physical sampling and analysis, all shipments of cocoa beans from Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia. Increase coverage of cocoa beans from other countries may be indicated.
