Import Alert # 33-16
Published Date: 12/05/2011
Type: DWPE
Import Alert Name:
Lead in Chili Containing Granular Seasonings/Snack Foods from Specific Firms
in Mexico

Reason for Alert:
Increased sampling of chili containing granular seasoning by the FDA has revealed that these products may contain lead levels in excess of the total daily dietary intake level recommended for children. These foods are distinct from traditional table/food preparation seasonings in that they may be consumed directly as snack foods. They are frequently displayed alongside of traditional snack foods, such as candy, at points of sale. They may also be labeled in a manner that suggests use as a snack item such as ¿Chili powder snack seasoning. Ideal complement to fruit and vegetable snacks or as a spicy treat by itself.¿ Some products are sold on the internet along with traditional Mexican candies. CFSAN is not including common table/food preparation seasonings as items of concern in this Import Alert.

Guidance:
Districts may detain without physical sampling and analysis, all products
identified on the attachment to this alert.

Districts should recommend for detention without physical examination under this Import Alert firms and products that have been sampled and found to contain a lead level above 0.1 ppm. The recommendation should include labeling, promotional information (including internet based) or any other information that depicts the food as a seasoning/snack food as opposed to a table/food preparation seasoning.
