"Detention Without Physical Examination of Sesame Seeds from Mexico and Surveillance of Sesame Seeds from Other Countries"

Reason for Alert:
FDA has detained sesame seeds from Guatemala, India, Mexico, and the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), because of insect adulteration.

From February 28 to April 5, 1989, Dallas District sampled and detained nine shipments of hulled sesame seeds adulterated with mammalian excreta. Amounts of excreta found in samples ranged from 5.6- 24.2 mg/ob with an average of 14.3 mg/lb.

From February 7 through March 22, 1990, Dallas District sampled and detained four shipments of sesame seeds adulterated with insect filth and mammalian excreta.

Guidance:
Districts may detain without physical examination all shipments of sesame seeds (hulled) from Lambard W. Atwood Jones
and all shipments of sesame seeds from manufacturers/shippers in the attachmnet for this alert.

In addition, surveillance sampling of sesame seeds for filth is indicated, especially from those countries that have already exhibited detentions.
