<title>Alternative Approaches to Antibiotic Therapy for the Prevention and Treatment of Bacterial Infections</title>
<description>Identify biologically active substances that have efficacy to treat or prevent the development of severe infections.</description>
<dictionary>Antibiotic resistance developed from agribusiness use of antibiotics in the food chain is a continuing problem. NCTR research includes the evaluation of the incidence and mechanisms of drug resistance.</dictionary>
<dictionary>As FDA sets antimicrobial drug-residue limits in animal products, this knowledge can be used to assist the agency to establish better strategies for antibiotic use. This information can also be used to help determine the contribution of different antimicrobials used in the food-production environment to the spread of multi-drug resistance and increased virulence of foodborne pathogens, and can be used to aid risk assessments.</dictionary>
<outcome>These studies will help address the need of alternative approaches to deal with multidrug resistant pathogens.</outcome>
