About FDA

Evaluating and Improving our Cosmetics Web Content

Description: The Cosmetics section of www.fda.gov is an essential resource for both consumers and industry. FDA does not have premarket approval authority for cosmetic products and ingredients, with the exception of color additives. FDA's authority is postmarket, and cosmetic firms have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety and proper labeling of their products. Providing industry with the information needed to stay in compliance and for consumers to make informed choices is therefore a key component of ensuring the safety of cosmetics on the market in this country. As an added benefit, if stakeholders can find the information they need more easily, they are likely to submit fewer inquiries that require individual responses. This would free up FDA resources for other public health priorities. Thus, efforts to upgrade cosmetics Web resources fit FDA's priorities in improving services to stakeholders, maintaining transparency, and maximizing the effective use of resources.

Having completed the re-architecture of the Cosmetics Web content, we are building on that effort by setting new goals for developing additional resources and improving existing content.
