About FDA

FDA GeoWeb

Description: A web-based mapping portal used by the agency to geospatially depict the impact of emerging incidents on FDA regulated industry.

Public Health Outcome: FDA uses its mapping capabilities to generate maps to support preparedness efforts and to respond to incidents, outbreaks, and natural and man-made disasters involving FDA regulated products.

Accomplishment: FDA GeoWeb is an easy to use geographic information web portal which provides FDA with access to spatial data and maps related to the Agency’s mission. FDA GeoWeb relies on a community of users supplying spatial information to the portal for others to use. The data and maps making up the majority of the content are generated by user projects and daily operations. It contains browser based tools allowing users to: 1) create and share their own web maps; 2) upload and symbolize data; 3) select from multiple background maps; and 4) share it with their office or all of FDA. Since its release in February 2013, employees from all of FDA’s Centers and Offices have become registered users and many programs are reaping its benefits. OCM and the Office of Emergency Operations use FDA GeoWeb to monitor active emergencies that are fast moving and constantly changing. These data feeds are updated as soon as new information is available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United Statement Geological Survey (USGS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other supporting government agencies. For example, FDA GeoWeb was used to provide situational awareness prior to and during the 2013 Presidential Inauguration and to determine impact to FDA regulated firms following the Moore, OK tornado in May 2013.
