The Science of Sex and Gender in Human Health Modules III and IV

Description: This online series of courses was designed to create a permanent foundation for sex and gender accountability in medical research and treatment by enabling researchers, clinicians, and students in the health professions to integrate knowledge of sex and gender differences and similarities into their research and practice. The curriculum is a collaboration between the FDA Office of Women's Health (OWH) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office on Research in Women's Health (ORWH). The NIH maintains this online series of courses on their server. There are three modules in the series, each with a theme. Module III addresses the influence of sex and gender on disease expression and treatment. Many diseases present differently in men and women, and the recommended therapeutics may not be similar for men and women with that disease. This course explores this concept in metabolic bone disorders, cardiovascular disease, pain, pulmonary function and substance abuse. Module IV planning and development will commence in FY 2014.
