About FDA

Cumulative number of Tobacco Retailer Enforcement Contracts awarded for the Fiscal Year

Dictionary: The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act authorizes FDA to contract, where feasible, with States, U.S. Territories and Indian tribes to assist with compliance and enforcement activities to help limit the availability of tobacco products to youth.

FDA awards contracts to States, U.S. Territories, and Indian tribes to assist with inspections of retail establishments and other enforcement activities to help enforce the regulatory provisions on Youth Access and Labeling and Advertising that took effect on June 22, 2010, in addition to other regulatory requirements.

In 2010, FDA awarded contracts to 15 States and by the end of FY2011 have contracts with a total of 37 states plus Washington, D.C. FDA plans to contract with every State and U.S. Territory that wants to assist with the enforcement of the regulations restricting the sale and distribution of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to children and adolescents, so there continues to be additional opportunities to contract with FDA.

FDA looks forward to working with all States, U.S. Territories, and Indian tribes in our shared efforts to reduce youth access to, and use of, tobacco products. For more information about CTP’s retail compliance check inspection contracts, please see the CTP website.
