Dictionary: This measure reports on the number of inspections completed under the Egg Rule Assignments and reported under PAC 03F836. This includes all egg farm inspections, including those conducted under assignment and those related to outbreaks or other "for cause" egg farm inspections.

Egg farms were required to register under the FDA Egg Rule. All large farms registered by November 1, 2010 will be inspected under the 2010-2011 Egg Assignment. As of November 1, 2010, 608 large egg farms had registered, so that is the total number of egg farms that FDA committed to inspect by December 2011. However, in proceeding with inspections, FDA discovered that several farms were no longer subject to the rule because they had ceased operations or canceled their registrations. FDA visited and performed “washout inspections” of these farms, and these reports are included in the cumulative number of inspectional visits. These “washouts” reduced the final inventory of farms subject to the Egg Rule to 543. The cumulative number of domestic egg farm inspections includes inspections completed by both FDA and state contractors.

Dictionary: Some egg farm inspections will be conducted by state investigators under contract to FDA. The data for this measure is pulled from the Field Accomplishments and Compliance Tracking System (FACTS), a system used by the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) to track and verify field performance activities, and there may be some lag time in getting state data into FACTS. Therefore, data from previous quarters may change with every quarterly update.
