"Detention Without Physical Examination of Salmonella in Frozen Whole Fish from Thailand"
Reason for Alert:
Los Angeles district has identified a pattern of Salmonella contamination in frozen raw fish from Thailand. From FY 87 through the end of FY 89, LOS-DO examined 74 samples representing 21 different types of frozen fish from 20 different processors located in Thailand. Of these, 31 samples (42%) tested postive for Salmonella. Salmonella analysis was performed according to BAM, 6th edition, 1984, chapter 7. CFSAN's Field Programs Branch has evaluated U.S. data for seafood from Thailand detained in FY 89. This data shows that the problem of Salmonella contamination in frozen raw fish from Thailand appears to be limited to those manufacturers/shippers listed in the attachment.
Guidance:
Districts may detain, without physical examination, all entries of frozen raw fish (all species, all styles) from the manufacturers/ shippers listed in the Red List to this Import Alert.
Do not include frozen fish products which have been otherwise processed, e.g., dried, steamed, or cooked in any way. Surveillance sampling of other manufacturers/ shippers from Thailand appears warranted.
