Reason for Alert:
Districts have reported an increasing number of entries of canned tuna shipments violative due to decomposition. This alert places firms on detention without physical examination which have demonstrated a continuing problem.
Analysis for decomposition is an organoleptic examination performed by a qualified seafood examiner or histamine determination using AOAC, 15th Ed., Sec. 977.13, fluorometric method.

Guidance:
Districts may detain without physical examination all canned tuna packed by firms identified on the red list for this alert.
