"Detention Without Physical Examination of Kwong Hung Seng Brand Yellow Bean Sauce From Bangkok- Thailand for Filth"
Reason for Alert:
Over the past three years, Los Angeles District has sampled eleven
entries of yellow bean sauce for filth analysis. In a recent 6-month
period (6/87-12/87), five samples were analyzed. All eleven analyses
(including the last five) found violative levels of storage insect
and rodent filth. In each case, the product was "Kwong Hung Seng
Sauce" manufactured by Kwong Hung Seng, Ltd. of Bangkok, Thailand
with a distinctive "dragonfly" logo on the label. Four sizes have
been analyzed - 8 fl. oz., 11 fl. oz., 21 fl. oz., and 24 fl. oz. -
and found to be adulterated with insect and rodent filth. Although
the sauce is a thick liquid, the insect filth consisted mainly of
whole storage beetle adults and larvae of various species. Other
types of filth included ants, rat/mouse hairs and feather fragments.

Districts may detain, without physical examination, all shipments of Kwong Hung Seng Yellow Bean Sauce from manufacturer Kwong Hung Seng, Ltd. Bangkok, Thailand, or the following known exporters:
