Title:  Comparative efficacy of MS-222 and benzocaine as anaesthetics under simulated transport conditions of a tropical ornamental fish Puntius filamentosus (Valenciennes).

Authors:  Pramod PK, Ramachandran A, Sejeevan TP, Thampy S, Pai SS

Drug:  Benzocaine

Fish species:  Barb, blackspot

Date:  2010

Sample:  blood, plasma

Ave Weight (gm):  12

Ave Water temp (°C):  22

Water:  Freshwater

Dosage:  20 mg/L 48h

Route:  BATH

Comments:  Fish were kept for 48h in water at 22 C and after sampling, remaining fish were transfered to tanks with water at 28 C.Fish euthanized with lethal dose concentration of 200 mg/L of MS-222 before sampling. The lowest increase in plasma cortisol levels was in MS-222 treated group followed by benzocain treatment within the first 6h of packing. Increase significantly lower (P<0.05) than nonsedated fish however no significant difference between MS-222 and benzocaine. Increase in blood glucose was significantly lower than nonsedated fish but not significantly different than the MS-222 treatment. Post transport mortality after 7d was 20% compared to 43% in nonsedated fish.
