Abstract:
This abstract describes the metabolism and residue depletion of an anthelmintic (de-worming) drug, albendazole (ABZ), in farm-raised Yellow Perch. In this study, six fish were administered a single oral dose of ABZ at 10 mg/kg. Investigators collected muscle tissue samples at various time points and assayed them for ABZ and its three major metabolites, albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO), albendazole sulfone (ABZSO2), and albendazole aminosulfone (ABZ-2-NH2SO2). The study showed that the marker residue listed in the Code of Federal Regulations for ABZ in cattle and sheep (ABZ-2-NH2SO2) is not formed in most fish. ABZSO2 is the most persistent ABZ metabolite and could potentially serve as a MR for yellow perch.
