Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority - Patient Safety Advisory

A new technology, commonly referred to as "smart" infusion pumps, is beginning to play a role in reducing the risk of administering IV medications, unfortunately, errors may still occur. These can include the infusion of an incorrect drug, overrides of safety mechanisms and the wrong unit of measure being entered into the pump. This article provides healthcare professionals with recommendations for implementing safe practice strategies with the smart pumps.
