Drug:
MS-222
Fish species:
Barb, blackspot
Date:
2010
Sample:
blood, plasma
Ave Weight (gm):
12
Ave Water temp (°C):
22
Water:
Freshwater
Dosage:
40 mg/L 48h
Route:
BATH
Comments:
Fish were kept for 48h in water at 22C and after sampling, remaining fish were transfered to tanks with water at 28C. Fish euthanized with lethal dose concentration of 200 mg/L of MS-222 before sampling. The lowest increase in plasma cortisol levels was in MS-222 treated group followed by benzocain treatment within the first 6h of packing. Increase significantly lower (P<0.05) than nonsedated fish however no significant difference between MS-222 and benzocaine. Increase in blood glucose was significantly lower than nonsedated fish but not significantly different than the benzocaine treatment. Post transport mortality after 7d was 18% compared to 43% in nonsedated fish.
