A physician only read 80 mammographic examinations independently in the 24 months prior to the facility's inspection.

If the physician reads 240 examinations within six months under the direct supervision of a qualified interpreting physician to requalify, can he or she resume reading mammography film independently?  Is there anything else the physician needs to be concerned about with respect to his or her continuing experience?

If the physician reads 240 examinations within six months under the direct supervision of a qualified interpreting physician, he/she can resume interpreting examinations independently. However, at the time of the next MQSA inspection at any facility where the physician interprets mammograms, he/she must have read 960 mammographic examinations during the 24 months immediately preceding the date of that facility’s annual MQSA inspection or the last day of the calendar quarter preceding the inspection or any date in-between the two. If not, the facility may be cited due to the physician failing to meet the continuing experience requirement and the physician may have to re-qualify again (see exemption – Question 2).
