If the radiologic technologist performs 25 examinations within six months under the direct supervision of a qualified radiologic technologist, can he or she resume performing mammographic examinations independently? Is there anything else the technologist needs to be concerned about with respect to his or her continuing experience?

If the radiologic technologist performs 25 examinations within six months under the direct supervision of a qualified radiologic technologist, he or she can resume performing examinations independently. However, at the time of the next MQSA inspection at any facility where the radiologic technologist performs mammograms, he or she must have performed 200 mammographic examinations during the 24 months immediately preceding the date of that facility’s annual MQSA inspection or the last day of the calendar quarter preceding the inspection or any date in-between the two. If not, the facility may be cited due to the radiologic technologist failing to meet the continuing experience requirement and the radiologic technologist may have to re-qualify again (see exemption - next question).
