Title:  Pharmacokinetics, plasma cortisol and effectiveness of benzocaine, MS-222 and isoeugenol measured in individual dorsal aorta-cannulated Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) following bath administration

Authors:  Kiessling A, Johansson D, Zahl IH, Samuelsen OB

Drug:  MS-222

Fish species:  Salmon, Atlantic

Date:  2009

t1/2-hr:  0

Sample:  blood, plasma

Ave Weight (gm):  1600

Ave Water temp (°C):  9

Water:  Saltwater

Dosage:  65 mg/l

Route:  BATH

Comments:  Gill ventilation after exposure. Fish were sedated with metomidate hydro3chloride (0.25 mg/l) for dorsal aorta cannulation and anaesthetized with MS-222 (60 mg/l). Cmax=14.7 ug/ml. MRT=1.2 min. Plasma cortisol peaked at 30 min at 588 ng/ml. Ventilation following exposure exposure greatly increased elimination rate. Anaesthetics were administered in two steps; an initial ten minute, low dose sedation, followed by a full strength anaesthesia bath.
