Title:  Pharmacokinetics of morphine and its metabolites in freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Authors:  Newby NC, Robinson JW, Vachon P, Beaudry F, Stevens ED

Drug:  Morphine

Fish species:  Trout, rainbow

Date:  2008

t1/2-hr:  18

Sample:  blood, plasma

Ave Weight (gm):  2269

Ave Water temp (°C):  12

Water:  Freshwater

Dosage:  40 mg/kg sd

Route:  IP

Comments:  Anaesthetic for surgery-benzocaine (25 mg/ml). Euthanized in buffered MS-222. AUC=202 (mg·h/L). MRT=14.7h. PK Data for M3G - t1/2 elim=107+/-38h, MRT=162h, AUC=160(est). Fresh water trout metabolize morphine more slowly than previously reported for sea water acclimated ones. They also metabolize morphine at a rate slower than in mammals (at least one order of magnitude). Only one metabolite was found - M3G which increased after injection and peaked about 2 days later.
