Title:  Efficacy of florfenicol (Aquaflor®) medicated feed to control columnaris disease in juvenile Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Authors:  Foott JS, Stone R, Bowker J, Fogerty R

Drug:  Florfenicol

Fish species:  Trout, rainbow (steelhead)

Date:  2007

Sample:  viscera

Ave Weight (gm):  2.96

Ave Water temp (°C):  18

Water:  Freshwater

Dosage:  10 mg/kg 10d

Route:  PO

Comments:  Fish were fed at 2% body weight/day. Florfenicol concentration was less than 0.25ng (detectable level). Treatment was not successful in controlling columnaris. Test fish did not consume enough antibiotic in this trial. No significant pathological effect on posterior kidney, liver or intestine. Higher mouth and oral cavity infection might be due to lower feeding level. Trial 2 feed rates estimated within 6-16% of target level. 10mg/kg may be insufficient to rapidly control columnaris outbreaks.
