5 Warnings and Precautions

5.6 Hyperprolactinemia

Additions and/or revisions underlined:

Tissue culture e xp eriments indicate that approximately one-third of human breast cancers are

prolactin dependent in vitro, a factor of potential importance if the prescription of these drugs is contemplated in a patient with pre viously detected breast cancer. An increase in pituitary gland, mammary gland, and pancreatic islet cell neoplasia (mammary adenocarcinomas, pituitary and

pancreatic adenomas) was observed in the risperidone carcinogenicity studies conducted in mice and rats [see Nonclinical Toxicology (13.1)]. Published epidemiologic studies have shown inconsistent results when e xp loring the potential association between hyperprolactinemia and breast cancer.
