Ophthalmic optics - Contact lenses and contact lens care products - Guidance for clinical investigations
Scope/Abstract
This International Standard gives guidelines for the clinical investigation (CI) of the safety and performance of contact lenses and contact lens care products.
Extent of Recognition
Partial recognition. The following part(s) of the standard is (are) not recognized:
-Table A.1 of Annex A.2.1 Contact lens investigations
-Annex A.2.3 Statistical considerations for extended wear evaluations
Rationale for Recognition
This standard is relevant to medical devices and is recognized on its scientific and technical merit and/or because it supports existing regulatory policies.

This standard is recognized in part because:
-Table A.1 conflicts with an existing published final guidance for orthokeratology; see Section 3 of guidance #3 below. See also reference #4 below (Walline et al) regarding study duration.
-Annex A.2.3 does not satisfy a premarket requirement under the FD&C Act for these devices.
