Event Description
It was reported via ms&s "caller states they are having issues injecting through the powerpiccs. He states they power inject these picc's during procedures but then the injection rate slows down. The power injector is detecting the psi is elevated close to 300 and then slows the injection rate which can affect quality of the procedure.Caller states the doctors do not think they should use powerpicc' s for this procedure but these patients have poor vascular access." ms&s response "explained that some possibilities could be that fibrin can build up in and around the lumen of the picc catheters. This can lead to an increase in the pressure during a procedure.Discussed keeping the contrast at room temperature to maintain proper viscosity during injections.Discussed catheter kinking and improper flushing as other causes that can contribute to these types of pressure issues.Discussed incorrect flushing sequencing related to the type of needless connectors used which can pull blood or contrast back into the tip of the catheter during this type of procedure.Suggested he discuss these issues with the floor nurse, nursing supervisors techs to ensure these potential issues are addressed.".
