Event Description
A journal article was reviewed that contained information regarding heart transplant outcomes in patients with left ventricular assist devices (vads). The article reports patients who were high on the transplant listing due to infection, right ventricular (rv) failure, aortic regurgitation, hemolysis, and ventricular arrhythmias.During and post-transplant procedures, patients experienced major bleeding which required usage of packed red blood cells (prbc), platelets, or fresh frozen plasma. Some patients experienced respiratory failure with the need for chest tubes or reintubation, vasopressor support, the need for postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ecmo) support, renal replacement therapy with dialysis, infections which included wound infections, pneumonia and sepsis confirmed via microbiological samples and necessitated antibiotic treatment. One patient had a primary graft dysfunction (pgd) and recovered after temporary ecmo support. The status/disposition of the vads is unknown. No further patient complications have been reported as a result of this event.Further follow up did not yet yield any additional information.
