(b)(4).As of this date, the device has not been returned for evaluation; therefore, the reported condition cannot be confirmed and/or duplicated.If additional information should become available, a supplemental medwatch report will be sent accordingly.
 
Event Description
It was reported from (b)(4) that during a veterinary tplo surgery on a canine, it was observed that the small battery drive device motor was slow to rev up or didn't engage at all.It was reported that there were no delays and they were able to complete the surgery using the same device successfully.There was no human patient involvement as this was a veterinary procedure.There were no reports of injuries, medical intervention or prolonged hospitalization.All available information has been disclosed.If additional information should become available, a supplemental medwatch report will be submitted accordingly.
 
Manufacturer Narrative
The actual device was returned for evaluation.Reliability engineering evaluated the device and observed that the device failed the power test at the test bench, coupling head was worn, unknown substance found on internal components, electric motor emits an unusual noise and the wire insulation on the electronic control unit was damaged.Therefore, the reported condition was confirmed.The assignable root cause was determined to be due to wear from normal use over time.If information is obtained that was not available for the initial medwatch, a follow-up medwatch will be filed as appropriate.
