Event Description
It was reported that during an unspecified orthopedic procedure, it was observed that the handpiece device would not work every time it was connected to the battery casing device.It was further reported that the contacts on the battery casing device were corroded.There was no delay to the surgical procedure as a spare device was available for use.It was reported that the surgery was completed successfully.There was patient involvement reported.There were no injuries, medical intervention or prolonged hospitalization.All available information has been disclosed.If additional information should become available, a supplemental medwatch report will be submitted accordingly.
 
Manufacturer Narrative
The actual device was returned for evaluation.Reliability engineering evaluated the device and observed that the unit did not work and the contact looked worn and corroded.It was also reported that the device failed pre-repair diagnostic assessment.Therefore, the reported condition was confirmed.The assignable root cause was determined to be wear from normal use over time.If information is obtained that was not available for the initial medwatch, a follow-up medwatch will be filed as appropriate.
