Percentage of Food Additive Petition (FAP) reviews completed on time

Dictionary: Any substance that is intentionally added to food is a food additive and is subject to premarket review and approval by FDA, unless the substance is generally recognized, among qualified experts, as having been adequately shown to be safe under the conditions of its intended use, or unless the use of the substance is otherwise excluded from the definition of a food additive. A safe animal food supply helps ensure healthy animals and people. One way that CVM ensures animal and human food safety is by reviewing and approving food additive petitions. The technical sections of each food additive petition are reviewed individually by CVM scientists to ensure that the petition is adequately evaluated prior to approval. The completion of these reviews contributes to each completed petition.
