Content Archiving/Expiration Project

Public Health Outcome: Lead the agency in the archiving/expiration of old and outdated content in order to generate a more positive internal search capability.

Accomplishment: In an effort to improve the search capability of FDA.gov, an archiving capability was developed during 2013. This allows for older pages on the site to be removed from the main search results but still available on the site through an archived search. OEA's goal for 2013 was to work with the Office of Information Management (OIM) to develop this capability and to work with the Centers to set and achieve goals for archiving content. An overall goal of 12,500 pages/files archived for 2013 was established (this represented approximately 10% of the pages/files on FDA.gov). The goal was reached in November 2013 and now as of January 31, 2014, there are about 14,000 pages archived. This has had a very positive impact on users who utilize the search capability on FDA.gov.
