FDA Website Search Improvements
Description: Implement website search improvement tactics on FDA's website.
Public Health Outcome: This project will faciliate an improved user experience.
Accomplishment: While over 55% of visitors to FDA.gov utilize the search capability, improving the search capability in 2013 was a top priority. To improve search capabilities, OEA focused on the following three areas: 1) adding search filters - this was the search improvement most frequently requested by FDA’s visitors and allows users to limit their search results by product area, such as drugs or food; 2) archiving older pages - sometimes, a search on FDA.gov would yield pages of links to documents from years ago, which visitors found frustrating; and 3) improving search usability - OEA updated both FDA’s search page and search results page based on the latest best practices in web usability. As a result of these changes, FDA’s search satisfaction score (as measured by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI)) has improved from a 69 in mid-2012 to a 78 in December 2013.
