Strengthening FDA Outreach and Communication Programs to Minority Health Care Providers and Patients

Description: Promote effective communication and the dissemination of information to the public, particularly underserved vulnerable populations.

Accomplishment: OMH has a verified Twitter account and is listed on the FDA and HHS social media lists. They have posted content consistently via the Twitter handle. The clinical trial brochure developed in collaboration with the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) has been finalized along with a corresponding infographic. We have posted the brochure electronically to the OMH and Patient Network webpages. FDA OMH participated in the HHS National Minority Health Month Twitter Relay April 16, 2014. We continue to explore opportunities to engage via twitter to disseminate important health information to stakeholders. OMH participated in the “Nifty Fifty” program at Bladensburg HS which brought Commissioner Hamburg in to discuss career opportunities within the FDA. The office also organized a health professional career day panel for Friendship Public Charter School held during February for Black History Month where FDA employees spoke to students about their work at the agency and career paths. Additionally, OMH is exploring opportunities to partner with Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and minority heath professional organizations to stand up internship programs at the FDA geared towards minority students.
