Product Code Training for Imported Products
Introduction
You're a filer with a local import company. You grab the invoices for today's incoming shipments. After completing the initial paperwork, you find you need to determine the FDA Product Code. Let's see, what is this stuff exactly? Hmmmm, condensed cream of mushroom soup. What is the Product Code for condensed cream of mushroom soup? No problem, you think to yourself, just go on the Internet to FDA's Product Code Builder site and "build" the product code.
You're a new FDA investigator. As a training assignment, your supervisor has given you a list of products and expects you to determine the correct FDA Product Code for each one. She also told you that it would be a fairly simple task because FDA's web-based Product Code Builder allows you to quickly find the correct code by searching for product names.
Sounds easy. But if you've never done it before, the FDA Product Code may seem a bit daunting. Whether you're a filer, a FDA investigator or analyst, the web-based application has been designed to be instinctive. Determining the product code is a simple matter of searching through the information and narrowing your choices until you find the product you're looking for. The best way to learn it, is to do it.
However if you're new to product codes, or only need to use them occasionally, you may want a little background information on what each field means and how the codes are built. Miscoding a product can cause a line to be needlessly detained or cause the importer to have to redeliver or recall the product. This adds to the importer's cost of doing business.
This tutorial is designed to give you the information you need to successfully code products. You can go through the tutorial in order, or jump right to a lesson that will meet an immediate need for information. The tutorial is available to you whenever you need it.
