Title:
Piperonyl butoxide enhances the bioconcentration and photoinduced toxicity of fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene to larvae of the grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio)
Authors:
Weinstein JE, Garner TR
Drug:
Fluoranthene+piperonyl butoxide
Fish species:
Shrimp, daggerblade grass
Date:
2008
Sample:
whole body
Ave Weight (gm):
0
Ave Water temp (°C):
22
Water:
Saltwater
Dosage:
0.125 mg/L 96h
Route:
BATH
Comments:
Same as results for [Piperonyl butoxide+fluoranthene]. Fluoranthene (FLU) concentrations of 0, 0.68, 1.04, 1.84, 2.93, and 5.81 ug/L were achieved for each dose of Piperonyl butoxide (PBO). LC50=1.3ug/L. LD50=2869ng/g. PBO significantly increased the bioconcentraion of FLU in all treatments, with the greatest increases occuring in the lowest FLU treatments. Bioconcentration factor for 1.04ug FLU/L increased 23.8 fold compared to the control. Bioconcentration factor for 5.81ug FLU/L increased 1.8 fold compared to the control. PBO significantly increased the photoinduced toxicity of FLU. Water salinity was 20 ppt.
