Per data log analysis, there was no indication of an issue in the log.The user facility sent a video demonstrating the sound coming from the fraction of inspired oxygen (fio2) stepper motor.After review of the video, the sound did not seem unusual.
 
Event Description
It was reported that prior to use of the device for a cardiopulmonary bypass (cpb) procedure, the electronic patient gas system (epgs) was making an unusual sound and the stepper motor was thought to be malfunctioning.As a result, an alternate device was employed.The surgical procedure was completed successfully.There was no delay, no blood loss, nor adverse consequences to the patient.

The reported complaint is not verifiable.Multiple diligence attempts for part return were unsuccessful so an evaluation could not be completed.If additional information becomes available on this complaint that would alter the facts and/or conclusion, a supplemental report will be filed accordingly.

The reported complaint was not confirmed.During laboratory analysis, the product surveillance technician (pst) performed verification testing without any observation of the electronic patient gas system (epgs) making any unusual sounds.Both stepper motors sounded normal.The epgs met specifications.The service repair technician (srt) did not duplicate the reported complaint.The epgs was powered on and the srt waited 15 minutes for it to warmup.The air and oxygen (o2) regulator were set to 50 pounds per square inch (psi) and the o2 analyzer calibrated successfully.There was no observation of the epgs making an unusual sound.The unit operated to the manufacturer's specifications.If additional information becomes available on this complaint that would alter the facts and/or conclusion, a supplemental report will be filed accordingly.
