Event Description
It was reported that a patient with a sling device had undergone concurrent radiation therapy.During a consult with the urologist, a perineal infection and abscess were noted as well as an increase in urinary incontinence.The onset of the infection symptoms was not known; however, it was after the radiation therapy had begun.A surgical procedure was performed in which a new artificial urinary sphincter (aus) device was implanted.The patient was treated with antibiotics to address the symptoms.There were no further patient complications.

There was no device available for analysis; therefore, no physical or visual analysis of the product could be performed.The reported patient symptoms are a known risk associated with implant of these devices as indicated in the instructions for use.Based on the information available, a conclusion code of known inherent risk of device was assigned to this investigation.
