The customer, a syncardia authorized distributor, reported that the freedom driver did not exhibit an alarm when the batteries were low on charge while supporting the patient.There was no reported adverse patient impact.The customer also reported that the patient was subsequently switched to a backup driver.

During investigation testing, the freedom driver passed all sections of functional testing which included sections that test the functionality of the battery alarms.In an attempt to reproduce the customer-reported issue, a battery discharge test was performed.The freedom driver sounded a battery alarm and then a fault alarm when the batteries were discharged below the required levels.Per freedom driver system operator manual section 10.The yellow battery alarm is indicated by a beeping tone in the range of 78 to 92 decibels and a blinking yellow visual alarm.This will occur if one or both batteries have less than 35% remaining charge, are removed, or are otherwise not functioning or recognized by the driver.If the batteries discharge below 30% the battery alarm will change to a fault alarm.The root cause of the customer-reported issue of the low battery alarm not working could not be conclusively determined.The freedom driver performed as intended with no evidence of a device malfunction.This issue will be tracked and trended as part of the customer complaint process.Syncardia has completed its investigation and is closing this file.(b)(4) follow-up report 1.
