Part B: Supplementary Information Sheet (SIS)
FR Recognition List Number 060 Date of Entry 05/29/2023
FR Recognition Number 6-487
Standard
ANSI AAMI  PB70:2022
Liquid barrier performance and classification of protective apparel and drapes intended for use in health care facilities
Scope/Abstract
Establishes minimum barrier performance requirements, a classification system, and associated labeling requirements for protective apparel, surgical drapes, and drape accessories intended for use in health care facilities.
Extent of Recognition
Partial recognition. The following part(s) of the standard is (are) not recognized:
3 Definitions, Procedure gown
4.1 Labeling
Annex B (Informative) Examples of barrier performance classification of surgical gowns, surgical gowns-E, isolation gowns, other protective gowns, surgical drapes, hoods, togas, and other protective apparel
Rationale for Recognition
This standard is relevant to medical devices and is recognized on its scientific and technical merit and/or because it supports existing regulatory policies.

This standard is recognized in part because:
3 Definitions "Procedure gown" is in conflict with existing regulations, 21 CFR 878.4040 and the guidance listed below (Ref (2)). FDA considers procedure gowns that claim moderate to high barrier penetration to be "surgical gowns" within the meaning of 21 CFR 878.4040.
4.1 Labeling is in conflict with 21 CFR 810.5(a) and final FDA Guidance (Ref (2)), which states that the level of liquid barrier protection must be clearly identified in labeling.
Annex B (informative), Examples of barrier performance classification of surgical gowns, surgical gowns-E, isolation gowns, other protective gowns, surgical drapes, hoods, togas, and other protective apparel", Figure B.2, "Example of a surgical gown-E intended for surgical applications" is in conflict with the published FDA Medical Gown website (Ref (3)), Surgical Gowns, Figure 1,"Critical Zones for Surgical Gowns."
Transition Period
FDA recognition of ANSI, AAMI PB70:2012 [Rec# 6-296] will be superseded by recognition of ANSI, AAMI PB70:2022 [Rec# 6-487]. FDA will accept declarations of conformity, in support of premarket submissions, to [Rec# 6-296] until July 6, 2025. After this transition period, declarations of conformity to [Rec# 6-296] will not be accepted.
