Event Description
A journal article was reviewed that contained information regarding cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation (pvi). The article reports patients who underwent cryoballoon ablation and experienced complications such as cardiac tamponade, transient ischemic attack (tia ), and respiratory insufficiency which required intubation. Two patients developed cardiac tamponade, in both, the effusion developed slowly and was noticed after the isolation of all pvs; both tamponades were managed with pericardiocentesis without cardiac surgery.Another patient experienced a tia with an aphasia detected 48 hours after the procedure; the symptoms recovered spontaneously, and no intervention was required. The status/disposition of the catheters is unknown. No further patient complications have been reported as a result of this event.Further follow up did not yet yield any additional information.
