It was reported that during set-up of the device for a cardiopulmonary bypass procedure, the battery on the perfusion system was fully charged but was not switching to battery back-up.As a result, an alternate device was employed.The surgical procedure was completed successfully.There were no delays, no blood loss, and no adverse consequences to the patient.

Per the field service representative (fsr), the system was not plugged into the universal power supply (ups).The batteries had very low voltage when removed from system-1 and metered.The customer stated when they tried to charge the battery.They removed it from the system and the estimated battery time back-up still showed "full".The laboratory evaluation confirms the complaint.The batteries were received in a severely depleted condition, 0.5 and 0.7 vdc.The batteries would not accept a charge.
