It was reported that during use of the device for a cardiopulmonary bypass procedure, the blood parameter monitor (bpm) started smoking.As a result, an alternate device was employed.The surgical procedure was completed successfully.There was no delay, no blood loss, nor adverse consequences to the patient.Per the clinical summary on (b)(6) 2015: according to the perfusionist (ccp), during cardiopulmonary bypass, the bpm started to smoke and the user smelled a burning electronic smell.The unit shorted out, the display went blank, then immediately reset as if it was just turned on.There were no alarms or error messages.The unit was turned off quickly and removed from use.A back-up unit was used for the reminder of the procedure.The case was completed successfully, without delay and without associated blood loss.There was no harm observed.
