(b)(4).Evaluation is in progress, but not yet concluded.Per follow-up with the fsr: when he unplugged the unit, there was about 125 minutes remaining on the central control monitor (ccm) battery icon and the battery register showed 18.00 amp hours (ah); on the ccm of the aps1, the battery icon was red; on the front panel of the aps1, the power light emitting diode (led) light was red; the fsr did not see or hear a warning before the system shut down; the batteries were replaced october 2014; the aps1 was not charged every month.The fsr replaced the batteries and checked operation.The unit operated to manufacturer specifications and was returned to clinical use.The suspect batteries were returned to the manufacturer for further evaluation.
 
Event Description
The field service representative (fsr) reported that during preventive maintenance (pm) of the device, battery back-up would only last three or four minutes.This perfusion system (aps1) has been in storage and not used.There was no patient involvement.
 
Manufacturer Narrative
The reported complaint was confirmed.During laboratory evaluation, the batteries were received in severely discharged condition, which is indicative of improper maintenance.The low voltages indicate potential degradation of the batteries.The batteries failed the load test.If additional information becomes available on this complaint that would alter the facts and/or conclusion, a supplemental report will be filed accordingly.
