Manufacturer Narrative
(b)(4).(b)(6).The device was returned for service; however, did not meet manufacturing specifications during pre-repair assessment.Reliability engineering evaluated the device and the reported condition was confirmed. The assignable root cause was determined to be due to device wear from normal use and servicing. If additional information should become available, a supplemental medwatch report will be sent accordingly.

Event Description
It was reported by (b)(6) that during an unspecified surgical procedure, it was observed that the small battery drive device stopped rotating while drilling the bone; then emitted an unusual sound.During service and evaluation, it was determined that the motor on the device seized, was rough running and defective. It was not reported if there were any delays in the surgical procedure or if a spare device was available for use. There was no patient involvement reported. There were no reports of any injuries, medical intervention or prolonged hospitalization. The exact date of this event was unknown. All available information has been disclosed. If additional information should become available, a supplemental medwatch report will be submitted accordingly.

Manufacturer Narrative
Subsequent follow-up with the reporter, additional information was received. The reporter clarified that the statement "when i drill the bone" was reported in error and has been updated to "when i run the handpiece".Therefore, it was determined that the reported malfunction is unlikely to cause or contribute to serious injury or death if it were to recur. Therefore, this complaint is not reportable. If information is obtained that was not available for the initial medwatch, a follow-up medwatch will be filed as appropriate.
