Information was received from a healthcare provider via a manufacturer representative regarding a spacer used for spinal surgery.Procedure performed was 1 level posterior lumbar interbody fusion. It was reported that intra-operatively, the implant was being impacted into a collapsed disc space and the top half sheared off when it met resistance greater than the rear hinge could withstand.Implant broke into pieces during impaction into disc space. The part of the implant remains in the patient.Surgeon felt it was still doing what it was intended to do and that it may cause more harm to try to explant it.The product came in contact with the patient. There was very little delay of 5 minutes. There were no patient symptoms or complications as a result of this event.
