Event Description
|
It was reported that high rate non-sustained episodes were stored on the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (icd) showing evidence of oversensing and pauses in the electrograms (egm), and patterns of noise as well as evidence of actual bradycardia were noted. No symptoms were reported by the patient at the time of the episodes and indicated they were sleeping at the time, however the icd classified the patient's activity level at the time as "active".Clinical data transmitted from the icd was reviewed by qualified engineering personnel and medical personnel, and it was theorized that the patient was performing a valsalva maneuver. The valsalva maneuver can result in diaphragmatic myopotential oversensing which occurs when the patient is straining and could explain the clustered patterns of noise. This in turn induces a vagal response resulting in bradycardia from the valsalva maneuver.In-clinic testing of the patient when intentionally performing this maneuver were able to reproduce the noise patterns that were observed on the stored high rate non-sustained episodes when bradycardia was noted. The icd remains in use.No further patient complications have been r eported as a result of this event.
