Literature was reviewed regarding the impact of long-term sinus rhythm maintenance on patient outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (tavr).Patients underwent tavr with either a medtronic corevalve (n = 112) or a non-medtronic edwards sapien valve (n = 166).The authors observed 43 deaths (all-cause = 31, cardiovascular = 12) during a mean follow-up of 24.5 months. No evidence was presented to suggest that a corevalve or its function contributed to any of the deaths.Adverse events that occurred following tavr were as follows: new onset atrial fibrillation (af), moderate to severe paravalvular leak, stroke, major bleeding, and rehospitalization for heart failure. The authors stated that patients with symptomatic af were treated with antiarrhythmic medication or electrical cardioversion. No additional adverse patient effects were noted.
