It was reported that during a robotic laparoscopic hemicolectomy procedure, in the the sigmoid anastomosis, the first stapler fired correctly, but no staples were visually confirmed as deployed. The device cut but did not staple. The tissue was prepped and another stapler was used, resulting in approximately 50% staple deployment, leaving half of the anastomosis wide open. The surgeon then redid the anastomosis with a third staple firing since it was too large to oversew, which resulted in two properly formed "donuts." a leak test was performed, revealing no leaks. It was noted that the procedure was converted to open surgery due to challenging anatomy, extending the surgical time by one hour.
