Additional Manufacturer Narrative
The case is still under investigation.A supplemental report will be submitted upon receipt of new and relevant information or upon completion of the investigation at the manufacturing plant.A distributor indicated that a patient previously received orthovisc injections without difficulty, then after a subsequent series (in both knees) reported severe right knee swelling and pain after the third injection and later developed ongoing joint pain involving both knees, hips, and shoulders. The patient reported discoloration of the lower right extremity, two right-knee aspirations with clear fluid, and ongoing treatment with hydrocodone and oral prednisone. No product was returned and the lot number was not provided; therefore, the batch record could not be reviewed.Nonconformance initiated an increase trend in complaint rate determined over 3 consecutive months for transient pain trend in 2024.The ifu was reviewed and warnings, storage temperature, handling precautions, and general device information were determined to be sufficiently documented.A review of the orthovisc stability study report did not identify related nonconformances or out-of-specification investigations and concluded annual lot stability profiles were consistent, indicating a stable process.Clinical assessment determined there is a temporal association between orthovisc injection and the reported right knee pain/swelling, which is a known inherent risk of the device; however, the complaint could not be confirmed and the available information was insufficient to assess whether the ongoing multi-joint symptoms were related versus progression of underlying osteoarthritis.Risk documentation was reviewed and post-mitigated risks were identified as low to moderate.A supplemental report will be submitted upon receipt of new and relevant
informations. This case will be monitored and trended for future analysis.
