The information provided by bard represents all of the known information at this time.Despite good faith efforts to obtain additional information, the complainant / reporter was unable or unwilling to provide any further patient, product, or procedural details to bard. The following were reviewed as part of this investigation: patient severity, trend analysis, applicable previous investigation(s), sample (if available), applicable fmea documents, labeling, and applicable manufacture records.Based on a review of this information, the following was concluded: the complaint was inconclusive; there was no indication that the returned sample was out of specification and no potential cause supporting the complainant reported increase in dvt was observed. The product returned for evaluation was a 5fr t/l powerpicc solo catheter. The sample showed indication of use as dressing residue was seen on the extension tubing and blood residue was seen on the catheter and within the distal tip.The sample was visually inspected for indication of damage, defect, or deformity and none was found.Microscopic examination of the catheter was unremarkable. No sign of defect was observed, the catheter surface appeared similar to a non-complainant sample, and the catheter end appeared to have been cut cleanly.Furthermore, tactile evaluation was unremarkable and the sample was patent to infusion using water and a 12ml syringe. No leakage was observed and flow was similar to a non-complainant sample.Deep vein thrombosis is a known complication in peripherally inserted central catheters and several risk factors outside of the manufacture of the specific product exist. There was no indication that this specific product sample was manufactured outside of specification or may have contained a condition which would have increased the risk of dvt.
