Event Description
A customer reported the aspiration does not seem as strong during phacoemulsification of a cataract procedure.A corneal burn occurred.There were no system messages displayed.Additional information was requested however, further information has not been received.
 
Manufacturer Narrative
The company service representative examined the system and was unable to confirm or replicate the reported event of an aspiration issue.As a preventative measure (pm), the company representative disabled a feature, as it is no longer in use.The system was then tested and met all product specifications.The system manufacturing device history record (dhr) was reviewed.Based on assessment, the product met specifications at the time of release.The system was found to meet specifications; therefore, the root cause of the reported event cannot be determined conclusively.Corneal burn is an issue that is occasionally reported with cataract surgery.According to the pennsylvania patient safety advisory abstract: preventing corneal burns during phacoemulsification, march 2010, vol.7, no.1: 23-25, most corneal burns can be traced to issues related to surgical technique and not to malfunctioning equipment.The manufacturer internal reference number is: (b)(4).
